Hello all! This is what happened in April:
So, at the end of March I ended up in Sevilla with my second Couchsurf host A. and her flatmate R.. I stayed much longer in Sevilla than I planned initially. I really liked the people I stayed with and the city was really charming. Certainly one of the cities I will visit again. During my time there we went to the "Encuentro de alternativas", an alternative event in a parc. Nice people, tasty food, good music and interesting workshops. What more could you ask for? Ow, and I got my poi and jaw harp out again, which was way too long ago. Apart from that I really liked walking in the old city part, close to the beautiful cathedral.
Hallo allemaal! Dit is wat er gebeurd is in april:
Dus, eind maart zat ik in Sevilla bij mijn tweede couchsurf host A. en haar flatgenoot R.. Ik ben veel langer in Sevilla gebleven dan ik eerst gepland had. Ik had de mensen waarbij ik verbleef heel graag en het was een leuke stad. Zeker één van de steden dat ik nog eens wil bezoeken. Tijdens mijn verblijf daar, gingen we naar het "Encuentro de alternativas", een alternatief evenement in een park. Leuke mensen, lekker eten, goede muziek en interesante workshops. Kun je nog meer vragen? Ow, en ik heb mijn poi en mondharp nog eens bovengehaald, wat veel te lang geleden was. Daarnaast vond ik het wel leuk om in het oude stadsgedeelte te wandelen, dichtbij de kathedraal.
In those days two friends of Belgium, T. and J., happened to visit Sevilla so we decided to meet up. At Plaza de España, a magnificent building, we saw each other. We wandered through the city, seeing the most touristy places with the hot sun burning our skin the entire time. By the end of the day we were tired and said goodbye before taking a well deserved nap. After a while I went to a third host because A. and R. were both going on vacation (thank you for the hospitality and the wonderful time! :)).
In de dagen dat ik daar was, waren er ook toevallig twee vrienden, T. en J., die Sevilla kwamen bezoeken dus besloten we om eens af te spreken. Bij Plaza de España, een magnifiek gebouw, hadden we afgesproken. We doolden wat door het stad, de meest toeristische plaatsen bezoekend, met de hete zon die ons langzaam maar zeker aan het verbranden was. Tegen het einde van de dag waren we moe en zeiden we elkaar vaarwel vooraleer een welverdiend dutje te nemen. Na een tijdje ging ik naar mijn derde host omdat A. en R. op vakantie gingen.
It was during my time with my third host, MJ., that I finally finished my drawing that I was making for my brother. Sure took a long time, but it was worth it. I learned a lot from that experience. It was also during this period that I saw M. and L. again. They came back from their trip to Morocco and decided to stay in Sevilla for some days. Their host, F., organised a CS picknick where we all went to. He even became my host for the last day I was is Sevilla. Thank you, MJ. and F. for the stay! :)
Het was tijdens mijn verblijf bij mijn derde host, MJ., dat ik eindelijk de tekening voor mijn broer kreeg afgewerkt. Heeft lang geduurd, maar het was het waard. Ik heb redelijk wat geleerd van die ervaring. Het was ook tijdens die periode dat ik M. en L. terug zag. Ze kwamen terug van hun trip naar Marokko en besloten om in Sevilla te blijven voor een paar dagen. Hun host, F., organiseerde een picknick waar we allemaal naartoe gingen. Hij werd zelfs mijn host voor de laatste dag dat ik in Sevilla was.
Me and M. decided to hitchhike together back to Lisbon where we both had to go anyway. We called ourselves the banana-team, because we found stickers of bananas, which we put on our clothes, while we were looking for cardboard to write on in a dumpster. We also tend to talk a lot about monkeys, so it all works out perfectly. We had a few stops on the road. First stop: Quinta Alvorada do Ouro. It took us two days to get there. At the evening of our first day hitchhiking we got picked up by this very friendly woman who decided we could stay at her place for the night. The next day we managed to get to Tavira quite easily, where V. picked us up to go to the quinta. It was quiet there. No other people around this time, except for two couchsurfers on one day. We decided to stay there for a while. In that time we helped out with a couple of things like cooking food, hanging door hinges, making hay bales, planting pumpkin seeds, cleaning the attic, etc. Me and M. explored the area around the quinta, while eating lots of oranges from all the orange trees we encountered. It was also during this time that I made myself a chewing stick from an olive tree branch. A chewing stick is an alternative to a tooth brush. I also decided to leave my laptop here. I was tired of carrying that heavy weight around and I didn't even use it anymore since I bought my new phablet. I hope it will be of good use for the quinta.
M. en ik besloten om samen voort te liften tot Lissabon waar we beiden toch naartoe gingen. We noemden onszelf het bananenteam omdat we stickers van bananen hadden gevonden, die we op onze kleren plakten, toen we karton aan het zoeken waren in een vuilbak. We neigen ook veel over apen te praten, dus dat kwam perfect uit. We hadden wel enkele stops gepland op de weg naar daar. Eerste stop: Quinta Alvorada do Ouro. We deden er twee dagen over om tot daar te geraken. In de avond van onze eerste dag liften, werden we opgepikt door een heel vriendelijke vrouw die besloot dat we bij haar thuis konden blijven slapen voor die nacht. De volgende dag waren we redelijk makkelijk in Tavira geraakt waar V. ons kwam oppikken om naar de quinta te gaan. Het was er rustig. Er verbleef niemand anders deze keer, buiten twee couchsurfers voor één dag. We besloten daar te blijven voor een tijdje. In de tijd dat we daar waren hielpen we met tal van dingen zoals eten koken, deurhengsels hangen, hooibergen maken, pompoenen planten, de zolder opkuisen, etc. M. en ik verkende de omgeving rondom de quinta, terwijl we massa's appelsienen aten van alle appelsienbomen die we tegenkwamen. Het was ook tijdens deze periode dat ik een 'chewing stick' had gemaakt van een olijfbomentwijgje. Een chewing stick is een alternatief voor een tandenborstel. Ik besloot ook om mijn laptop daar te laten. Ik was het moe om dat zware gewicht mee te zeulen, terwijl ik het niet eens meer gebruikte sinds ik mijn nieuwe phablet had gekocht. Ik hoop dat de quinta het goed kan gebruiken.
After the quinta (thanks again V.!) we headed for Budens to go see the Vamos Verde project where I was before. This time the wife of D. was also there. M. and I decided to put our tent next to the pond. Maybe not the best idea because the frogs gave an ear deafening concert every evening. In our days we were there we visited another project nearby called "the punks". And yes, it was literally a project with punks living their lives in ecologically made houses in the middle of a forest.
Na de quinta (Alweer eens bedankt V.!) gingen we richting Budens om naar het Vamos Verde project te gaan, waar ik voordien al eens was geweest. Deze keer was de vrouw van D. er ook. M. en ik besloten om onze tent naast de vijver te zetten. Misschien niet het allerbeste idee gezien de kikkers elke avond een oorverdovend concert gaven. In de dagen die we daar waren, hebben we ook een ander dichtbijzijnd project bezocht dat "the punks" heette. En jawel, het was letterlijk een project met punkers die leefden in hun ecologische huisjes in het midden van een bos.
After Budens (thanks again for the hospitality! :)) we headed for Lisbon, with a short stop in Carrapateira to see the beach. There we bumped into a dog who started following us. For a second we thought that we had to take him with us, but as soon as we got to the center of the town he started to follow other people. Hitchhiking was pretty easy that day. The last ride we got was from a friendly couple who were into ecology themselves, and took us straight to Lisbon.
Na Budens (weer bedankt voor de gastvrijheid! :)) gingen we richting Lissabon, met een korte stop in Carrapateira om het strand te zien. Daar kwamen we een hond tegen die ons begon te volgen. Voor even dachten we dat we hem met ons moesten meenemen, maar van zodra we in het centrum van het dorp kwamen begon hij andere mensen te volgen. Liften ging heel makkelijk die dag. De laatste rit kregen we van een vriendelijk koppel die zelf met ecologie bezig waren en ons rechtstreeks mee naar Lissabon namen.
In Lisbon M. had to go back to her classes. L., who was back earlier from Sevilla, and A., their flatmate also had to go to classes. In those days we hang out in Lisbon and some friends of M. came over from Poland to visit her. During that time I bumped into three friends from Leuven from whom I didn't know they were there! Small world, isn't it? One of them, F., happened to go to the north with his van. I decided to go with him.
In Lissabon aangekomen, moest M. terug haar lessen hervatten. L., die vroeger dan ons was aangekomen uit Sevilla, en A., hun flatgenoot, moesten ook naar de les. Tijdens die dagen hingen we wat rond in Lissabon en twee vriendinnen van M. kwamen van Polen om haar te bezoeken. Ook ben ik in die tijd daar drie vrienden tegen gekomen van Leuven waar ik niet van wist dat ze daar waren. Kleine wereld, hé? Één van hen, F., ging noordwaarts met zijn busje. Ik besloot om met hem mee te gaan.
And so we left on the 30th of April to Aveiro. Or at least that was the initial plan. Right before we left in Lisbon my friend asked "Do you want to make a small detour and go to a Rainbow Gathering?" Apparently there was one on the way to Aveiro. "Yeah, sure!" I said and so F., S., who also wanted to have a ride to the north, and I went to the gathering. We managed to find it by the evening. Right in time for dinner! It was a really beautiful region there, I must say. During the evening I managed to put up my tent there. After the campfire I went to sleep. En zo vertrokken we op de 30ste april naar Aveiro. Of dat was toch het initiële plan. Juist voor we uit Lissabon vertrokken, vroeg mijn vriend: "Willen we anders een kleine omweg maken en naar een Rainbow Gathering gaan?" Blijkbaar was er één op de weg naar Aveiro. "Ja, natuurlijk!" zei ik en zo gingen F., S., die ook een lift noordwaarts wilde hebben, en ik naar de gathering. Het lukte ons om het te vinden tegen de avond. Juist op tijd voor het avondeten! Het was er echt een prachtige regio, moet ik zeggen. Tijdens de avond lukte het me om mijn tent daar op te zetten. Na het kampvuur ging ik slapen. De rest van wat er daar gebeurde is voor de volgende nieuwsbrief. ;) karaluchy pod poduchy :)
The conclusions for this month? On one hand it really felt nice to send some unused stuff back home with my friends and leave that laptop behind. Travelling lighter and getting to the essence of my backpacking gear is a nice goal to work to. Next item that needs to get chucked out: my leather jacket. It's heavy and not that functional. A lighter jacket made out of a softer material would be much better. Secondly, that trip back through the south only confirmed my thoughts. I really like the south of Portugal and see myself building something there. The only thing that I need to watch out for is not to rush too much. I really need to think this through before I make a decision.
De conclusies van deze maand? Langs de ene kant voelde het heel goed aan om wat ongebruikte spullen terug naar huis te sturen met mijn vrienden en de laptop achter te laten. Lichter reizen en tot de essentie geraken van mijn reismateriaal is een leuk doel om naartoe te werken. Volgende object dat er uit moet: mijn leren vest. Het is zwaar en niet zo functioneel. Een lichtere vest gemaakt uit een zachtere stof zou veel beter zijn. Ten tweede, die trip terug door het zuiden hebben alleen maar mijn gedachtes bevestigd. Ik vind het zuiden van Portugal echt wel leuk en ik zie mezelf daar zeker iets bouwen. Het enige idee waar ik voor op moet passen is dat ik me niet teveel haast. Ik moet hier echt goed over nadenken vooraleer ik een beslissing maak.
